Supervises, schedules, coordinates, and participates in the work of staff engaged in the maintenance and repair of various light, medium, and heavy-duty City vehicles and equipment. Supervises, coordinates, assigns, evaluates and participates in the work activities of entry and journey-level mechanics responsible for maintaining and repairing City vehicles and equipment including light, medium and heavy-duty power equipment, non-power equipment, and off-road equipment. Conducts, trains, and assists in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing various air-conditioning, exhaust, and electrical systems; alternative fueling systems (e.g., Compressed Natural Gas [CNG], propane, and biofuel); hybrid and electric drive systems; fuel injection, ignition, emission, and hydraulic systems; and related computer-controlled equipment. Assists and oversees staff in conducting safety inspections and preventive maintenance for vehicles and equipment. Trains and instructs mechanics in difficult repair work. Supervises, coaches, and motivates assigned staff. Approves and monitors overtime and leave requests and prepares employee performance evaluations. Interprets and applies City policies, procedures, and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provisions. Participates in the selection process of new employees. Provides, coordinates, and ensures mechanic staff is trained in departmental rules and policies, standard operating procedures, safety standards, and applicable rules and regulations. Analyzes, recommends and establishes workload priorities. Recommends and implements work plans and objectives, schedules work assignments, and ensures that mechanic shop personnel support departmental values, standards and goals. Coordinates repair work with other City departments. Helps resolve scheduling issues, and responds to inquiries, complaints, and problems in an efficient and timely manner. Develops and recommends goals, programs and operational methods to the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent that will improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of fleet services. Prepares and maintains written and electronic reports and records, including the inventory of tools, parts and damages. Prepares detailed repair cost estimates and performs special quality control inspections on a regular basis. Utilizes specialized fleet maintenance software applications to monitor fleet operations related to the repair of City vehicles and equipment and to build and implement preventative maintenance service schedules. Reviews repair work orders for accuracy and maintains electronic repair records. Reviews material acquisition invoices and monitors parts warehouse expenditures to ensure that spending is contained. Procures shop materials following authorized Finance policies and procedures. Oversees the maintenance of tools and work areas. Acts as the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent in their absence. Follows and enforces applicable federal, state, local, and department laws, rules, regulations, and procedures, including applicable safety rules and regulations. Ensures that employees are trained in workplace safety practices involving tools, chemicals, and equipment, and enforces safety practices and procedures. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
